потому́ что and поэ́тому look alike and do opposite jobs: one gives the reason, the other the result. Get them straight, and your opinions hold together.

Why? Because …

| Бы́ло хо́лодно, поэ́тому мы оста́лись до́ма. | It was cold, so we stayed at home. |
потому́ что introduces the reason; поэ́тому introduces the result.

так как can open a sentence; потому́ что usually doesn't.
