кото́рый joins two sentences about the same person or thing: Gagarin is the man who first flew into space. It agrees like any adjective.

Who and which: кото́рый
кото́рый agrees with the word it describes.

кото́рый takes its gender and number from the word it describes: челове́к → кото́рый, кни́га → кото́рая, письмо́ → кото́рое.
