Week 22, Lesson 43, Monday
Arrive and leave: при- and у-
The going verbs you know take a prefix and a direction. Two prefixes do most of the work on a trip: при- for arriving, у- for leaving.
1Recap 5 minutes
Three questions from Week 21, before anything new.
2Goal 1 minute
I can say when I arrive and leave, on foot or by transport, in the past and the future.
3The lesson 20 minutes
In this lesson
- Prefixes give a direction
- Past and future
- On a trip
Prefixes give a direction
Six prefixes, six directions. Arrows first, rules after.
| Russian | Meaning |
|---|---|
| при- + е́хать = прие́хать | to arrive, by transport |
| у- + е́хать = уе́хать | to leave, by transport |
| при- + йти = прийти́ | to arrive, on foot |
| у- + йти = уйти́ | to leave, on foot |
After a prefix, идти́ becomes -йти. These are result verbs: they happen once.
Past and future
| Verb | Past | Future |

| прие́хать | прие́хал, прие́хала | прие́ду |
| уе́хать | уе́хал, уе́хала | уе́ду |
