3The lesson 20 minutes

Где? — в Москве́

Look at the street below before reading any rules. Three small words answer where? Notice which places get в, which get на, and the one that needs nothing at all.

в о́фисев па́ркедо́мана у́лицев insideна on, atдо́ма at home
Notice: inside places take в, the street takes на, and home is just до́ма.

After в and на, most places change their last letter. The arrows show the most common changes.

Dictionary formWhere?
Москва́в Москве́

Росси́яв Росси́и
Ме́ксикав Ме́ксике
Ме́хиков Ме́хико

Most places add -е. Nouns in -ия switch to -ии. Foreign names in -о, like Ме́хико, never change.

Most places take -е; -ия becomes -ии; foreign names in -о never change.

в or на

The choice between в and на is mostly about space: inside or on top. A few words, like рабо́та and уро́к, simply take на; learn them as phrases.

UseExamples
вв о́фисе, в шко́ле, в го́роде
нана рабо́те, на у́лице, на уро́ке

в is for being inside; на for open spaces, activities and a few fixed words. And one word needs no preposition at all: до́ма, at home.

жить: to live

жить is Pattern I, with one surprise: a в appears in every form.

Same endings, different stems. In жить the ending carries the stress.

4Listen and say 5 minutes

Sound of the lesson: Voiced sounds lose their voice

At the end of a word or before a voiceless sound, б, в, г, д, ж, з turn voiceless: в па́рке starts with an f.
